Afrikaans for Beginners

If you’re an English speaker interested in learning foreign languages, then you’ve probably already considered languages like Spanish and French. Maybe you’ve already succeeded in learning these languages and are now looking for a new challenge. Afrikaans is commonly overlooked when it comes to language learning, but it’s actually a fun and interesting language to learn.

Afrikaans is one of the official languages of South Africa and Namibia. About 10 million people are native speakers of the language, which is sometimes referred to as Cape Dutch. When Dutch colonists arrived in South Africa in the 17th century, they brought their language with them, which then evolved into the Afrikaans we hear spoken in the region today. Afrikaans is a simplified version of Dutch with major influences from Bantu and Khoisan as well as Malay and Portuguese.

Learning outcomes

In this level, students will be able to handle a basic range of situations immediately relevant to the student‘s needs in simple everyday situations.  To use basic written language for simple practical purposes.  To understand the main point of short extracts in a limited range of situations.

Our Tutor

Our tutor is a native speaker in Afrikaans and will be available online to answer any questions regarding the course, however, if you require a 1 on 1 video lesson to master the pronunciation, it will be R120 per 45 min.  This can be done via skype or whatsapp and students are required to have a cellphone or computer with a camera. 1 video lesson per week would be recommended but not mandatory.
